Today is Wear It Purple day! On September 22nd 2010, 18 year
old Tyler Clementi jumped to his death off the George Washington Bridge in New
Jersey. Report after report poured in about the individual stories of young
people who were committing suicide because of bullying and homophobia.
Katherine Hudson and Scott Williams created “wear it purple”
in order to raise awareness about homophobic bullying and youth suicide. This
movement has the potential to save thousands of lives, and change countless
minds.
Wear it Purple has a simple message:
“You have the right to be proud of whom you are.”
This comes at a touchy time where I live. The news just
reported yesterday how a gay teen at the local high school was beaten in the
parking lot at school while others videoed the event. The beaten teen avoided
school for the next few days and also tried to kill himself to avoid being
bullied again. It breaks my heart to hear this event to place so close to my
own home.
So for that young man and the other men and woman being bullied for you they were born to be, I wear purple today for you. For the hope one day bullying will be a thing of the past. I wear purple today for those who have lost their battle with bullies. Today, I remember you.
